Make a WiFi QR code

Guests point their camera at it and join your network, with no password to spell out. WiFi is already chosen: type the network name and password.

Your QR code appears here as you type.

How to make a QR code for your WiFi

  1. Type the network name. Enter it exactly as it appears in your phone's WiFi list, with the same capital letters and spaces.
  2. Pick the security and type the password. Choose WPA for almost any home or office router, including WPA2 and WPA3. Choose None for an open network.
  3. Tick Hidden network only if it is hidden. Leave it off if the network shows up in the list when you look for WiFi.
  4. Download and print. Use SVG for a sign or a card, PNG for a screen. Scan the printed copy once with your own phone to check it joins.

What is inside a WiFi QR code

A short line of text in a standard format that phone cameras understand. For a network called Home with the password sunflower, it reads:

WIFI:T:WPA;S:Home;P:sunflower;H:false;;

T is the security type, S the network name, P the password and H whether the network is hidden. Characters that have a meaning in this format, such as a semicolon or a colon in your password, are escaped for you so the phone reads them correctly.

The password is stored as plain text in the pattern. Anyone who scans the code, or opens the image in a QR code reader, can see it. Treat a printed code like a written-down password: put it where you would happily tell people the password, and consider a separate guest network.

Scanning it on a phone

Current iPhones and Android phones read WiFi codes with the built-in camera: point it at the code, tap the network name that appears, and the phone joins without the password being typed. Many Android phones also have a scan button in their WiFi settings.

The code is static. If you change the WiFi password or the network name, the old code stops working, so make a new one and replace the print.

Common questions

Does a WiFi QR code work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, with the camera app on current iPhones and Android phones. The phone shows the network name and joins when you tap it.
Which security type should I choose?
WPA for nearly every router, including WPA2 and WPA3 Personal. WEP only for very old equipment, and None for an open network with no password.
Can someone see my password in the code?
Yes. The password is stored in the code as plain text, so anyone who scans it can read it. Only put the code where you would share the password anyway.
What happens if I change my WiFi password?
The code stops working, because it holds the old password. Make a new code with the new password.
Does it work for networks with a username, like at work or university?
No. This format covers networks that need only a password. Networks that ask for a username and password are not supported.
My password has symbols in it. Will it still work?
Yes. Symbols that the format uses, such as ; , : and quotes, are escaped automatically.
Is my WiFi password sent anywhere?
No. The code is made in your browser. The password exists only on your device and in the image you download.
