Slug generator

Turn a title into a clean URL slug as you type. Accents become plain letters, and you choose the separator and length.

Nothing is uploaded. Slugs are made on your device.

How it works

  1. Type or paste a title. Put the title in the box. Put several titles on separate lines to get one slug per line.
  2. Choose the separator and options. Pick a hyphen, underscore or dot, lowercase or keep case, a-z only or any script, and an optional maximum length. The slug updates straight away.
  3. Copy the slug. Press Copy to put the slug, or all slugs, on your clipboard.

What the generator does to your text

The same steps run on every title, in this order:

  • Letters that have no plain form of their own are spelled out: ß becomes ss, æ ae, ø o, ł l and þ th. An ampersand becomes the word and.
  • Accents are removed from letters, so é, ü and ñ become e, u and n. Ligatures and full-width letters fold to plain ones.
  • Apostrophes inside a word are dropped, so don't becomes dont rather than don-t.
  • Everything else that is not a letter or a digit (spaces, punctuation, emoji) separates words. Runs of separators collapse to one, and none is left at either end.
  • With a maximum length, the slug stops at the last whole word that fits. A single word longer than the limit is cut.

Hyphens, underscores or dots

Use hyphens for web addresses. Google's URL structure guidance recommends hyphens rather than underscores to separate words, because they make the words easier to tell apart. Underscores suit file names and database keys, and dots suit some file naming schemes and package names.

Keep slugs short and lower case. A slug of three to six meaningful words is easy to read, share and type, and lower case avoids two addresses that differ only by capital letters.

Non-Latin text

By default the slug keeps only the letters a to z and the digits 0 to 9, which every system accepts. Words in other scripts, such as Chinese, Japanese, Russian or Arabic, are removed in that mode, and the tool tells you when that empties the slug. Choose Any script to keep them: modern browsers display such addresses correctly and most publishing systems accept them. The tool does not transliterate (it does not turn привет into privet), because there is no single correct spelling for most scripts.

Private by design

Slugs are made in your browser with plain JavaScript. The text is never uploaded, logged or stored. Need to change the case of a phrase or a variable name instead? Try the case converter.

Common questions

What is a URL slug?
The readable part of a web address that names one page, such as how-to-make-bread in example.com/blog/how-to-make-bread. It is usually made from the page title.
How do I make a slug from a title?
Type or paste the title into the box. The slug appears under it as you type, ready to copy.
Should a slug use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens, for web pages. Google's URL guidance recommends hyphens rather than underscores to separate words. Use underscores for file names or database keys if your system prefers them.
What happens to accented letters?
They fold to the plain letter: é becomes e, ü becomes u, ñ becomes n. Letters with no plain form are spelled out, so ß becomes ss and æ becomes ae.
Can I make slugs for many titles at once?
Yes. Put each title on its own line and you get one slug per line. Copy all of them in one go.
How long should a slug be?
Short enough to read at a glance; three to six meaningful words is a good target. Use the maximum length option to cap it, and the tool stops at the last whole word that fits.
Does it remove words like a, the and of?
No. Every word you type is kept, so the slug always matches the title. Delete words in the box if you want a shorter slug.
What about Chinese, Japanese or Cyrillic titles?
With a-z only those letters are removed. Switch Characters to Any script to keep them in the slug. The tool does not transliterate them into Latin letters.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The slug is made in your browser and the text never leaves your device.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no account, no limit and no sign-up.
