How to make a meme
- Choose your image. Any photo, screenshot or drawing. It opens on your device and is never uploaded.
- Type your top and bottom text. The preview updates as you type. Add more text boxes if the joke needs them, and drag any caption to where it reads best.
- Download it.You get a PNG or JPG at your image's own size, or the canvas size you chose, with nothing stamped on it.
Use your own picture
This generator works from images you bring: JPG, PNG, WebP and anything else your browser can open, including the first frame of a GIF. Phone photos are turned upright using the orientation saved in the file, so a portrait shot stays portrait. With the Original canvas, the meme is made at the same pixel size as your image, plus any caption bars. Nothing is upscaled; only an extremely large result (over about 16 megapixels) is scaled down, because phone browsers cannot draw a bigger canvas.
There is no built-in template library. Popular meme images belong to their photographers and studios, so rather than hand out copies, the tool lets you start from a picture you have the right to use.
The classic look: Impact with a thick outline
The meme style most people picture is white capital letters in Impact, a tall condensed typeface, with a heavy black outline so the words stay readable on any photo. That is the default here. Impact comes with Windows and macOS; where a device does not have it, the tool uses Anton, a free typeface in the same condensed style published under the SIL Open Font License, so the meme still looks right on a phone.
- Text size is a share of the image width, so a caption looks the same on a small or a large picture. Long words shrink to fit.
- Colour: white, black, yellow or any colour you choose. The outline switches to black or white automatically to stay readable.
- Outline: none, thin, classic or thick.
- All capitals is on by default; turn it off for sentence case.
Caption bars above and below the photo
Choose Caption bars to put the text on solid bars outside the picture instead of over it, so nothing in the photo is covered. Turn on a bar on top, a bar at the bottom, or both. Each bar grows to fit its text, and the text is black on a light bar and white on a dark one. Pick white, black or any colour for the bars and set how much space surrounds the text. Long captions shrink so a bar never takes more than half the photo's height. The bars are part of the download.
Sizes for social media, or any size
Keep the Original canvas to match your photo, tap a platform size such as an Instagram portrait post or a story, or choose Custom size and enter any width and height. On a fixed canvas, choose how the photo goes in: Fit shows the whole photo with the background colour in the spare space, Fill stretches it to the canvas, and Crop to fill covers the canvas and trims the edges. Caption bars sit inside the canvas, and the photo fills the space between them. A small photo on a large canvas is enlarged to fit and can look soft.
Move the text where you want it
Top text starts at the top edge and grows downwards; bottom text starts at the bottom edge and grows upwards, so a second line never runs off the picture. Drag any caption to move it. From the keyboard, Tab to a caption on the image and use the arrow keys, holding Shift for bigger steps. Captions always stay inside the image.
No watermark, no sign-up, nothing uploaded
Your download is clean: no logo, no corner stamp. There is no account to make. The image and your text stay in your browser the whole time; the meme is drawn on your device with the browser's canvas, which also means it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
On some phones, the download lands in your Files or Downloads app rather than your photo library. From there you can save it to Photos or share it straight to a chat.
