How to convert a PDF to PNG
- Add the PDF. Every page appears as a thumbnail, all chosen, and page 1 is drawn as a PNG straight away.
- Choose pages and a resolution. Click a page to leave it out or bring it back. Pick 150 DPI for screens or 300 DPI for print; the preview shows the real pixel size and file size.
- Download. Save the page on screen as one PNG, or every chosen page together as a zip.
Why PNG for PDF pages
PNG saves every pixel exactly, so letters, table lines and chart edges stay crisp with no smudges around them. That makes it the better choice for pages of text, diagrams, slides and anything you will paste into a document, crop or zoom into. JPG is better when a page is mostly a photo or a scan, because it is many times smaller there.
| A4 page at 150 DPI (1239 × 1754 px) | PNG | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| A page of text with a chart box | 412 KB | 362 KB |
| A page that is mostly a photo | 1.64 MB | 208 KB |

Resolution and file size
Doubling the DPI doubles the width and the height, so the PNG has four times the pixels and is roughly four times the size. An A4 page is 1239 × 1754 pixels at 150 DPI and 2479 × 3508 at 300 DPI. Use 150 DPI for anything seen on a screen, and 300 DPI only when the image will be printed or needs zooming into.
The page is drawn on a white background, as it looks in a PDF viewer, so the PNG is not transparent. To pull out the photos that are inside a PDF rather than picture whole pages, that is a different job; the PDF to JPG page explains the difference.
