How to crop a picture into a circle

  1. Add a photo or logo. The circle is already on, centred on the picture.
  2. Place the circle. Drag it over the face or logo and pull a corner to make it bigger or smaller. It always stays round.
  3. Download the PNG. The corners outside the circle are transparent, so the round picture sits cleanly on any background.

Where a round PNG is useful

Anywhere you place the picture yourself: a team page, a slide, a document, an email signature or a website header. The file is still a square, but everything outside the circle is see-through, so the page colour shows around it whether that is white, black or a photo.

Some image viewers show see-through areas as a grey checkerboard or as black. That is the viewer, not the file. Drop the PNG onto a slide or page and the corners disappear.

Profile pictures are made round for you

Social apps and chat apps cut your profile picture into a circle themselves, so they only need a square upload. A circle PNG works there too, and the circle here is a handy preview of what will show. These are the profile sizes the crop tool knows:

  • Instagram320 × 320 px
  • Facebook320 × 320 px
  • X400 × 400 px
  • LinkedIn400 × 400 px
  • YouTube800 × 800 px
  • TikTok200 × 200 px

Pick them under Social sizes in the tool. Several platforms publish no exact pixel size; the tool notes which, and the crop page lists every source.

Getting a sharp circle

The download is a square as wide as your circle in the original photo, so a bigger circle keeps more detail. The result bar under the picture shows the pixel size as you drag. To make the file smaller afterwards, run it through Compress image; it keeps PNG transparency.

The full tool

This page opens Crop image with the circle shape already on. Every other option is still there, so you can change your mind without leaving. For other jobs, see all image tools.

Common questions

Why is the circle saved as a PNG?
The corners need to be see-through, and JPG cannot store transparency: it would fill them with a solid colour. PNG keeps them empty.
The corners look black or checkered. Is that wrong?
No. That is how some viewers draw transparent pixels. Placed on a page or slide, the corners show the background behind them.
Can I crop an oval instead of a circle?
No. The tool crops circles and rectangles only. For an oval look, a rectangle crop placed in an app that rounds corners is the closest option.
Can I add a border around the circle?
Not in this tool; it cuts the circle and leaves the rest transparent. Many slide and design apps can add an outline to the PNG you download.
Do I need a circle crop for WhatsApp or Instagram?
Not really: they make your picture round themselves. Upload a square, or use the circle here to check that your face sits in the middle before you upload.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The crop is made in your browser and the picture stays on your device.
